However, the emphasis of the graduate program is to immerse the student in the discipline of genetics by classroom, journal club and seminar activities in concert with providing a wide range of cutting edge research opportunities. The PBMS program offers a joint admissions process and a standard first-year curriculum for the five participating departments.

Nechiporuk received his doctorate in Human Genetics from University of Utah in He did his postdoctoral training in developmental biology at University of Washington. Nechiporuk joined the faculty at OHSU in The Nechiporuk laboratory studies development of the peripheral nervous system using zebrafish as a model.
